Former Auburn offensive coordinator Philip Montgomery has landed a job on the staff of the United Football League’s Birmingham Stallions, it was announced Wednesday.

Montgomery, 52, was fired by Auburn head coach Hugh Freeze in January after just one season. The Tigers replaced him with longtime Ole Miss assistant Derrick Nix.

With the Stallions, Montgomery will serve as co-offensive coordinator and also coach running backs and tight ends. Head coach Skip Holtz holds the title of offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach.

A Texas native, Montgomery was also head coach at Tulsa from 2015-22. He also worked as an assistant at Houston and Baylor.

Also new to the Stallions’ staff are secondary coach Corey Chamblin, defensive line coach Bill Johnson, offensive line coach David DeGuglielmo. Birmingham retained defensive coordinator and linebackers coach John Chavis, special teams coach Chris Boniol, wide receivers coach Mike Jones and assistant secondary coach Daric Riley from the 2023 staff.

Birmingham went 17-3 the last two seasons in the revived USFL, winning the league championship both years. The USFL has since merged with the XFL to form the UFL, which will begin play in eight cities this spring.

The Stallions’ first game is set for March 30 at Arlington. The home opener at Protective Stadium is April 13 vs. Memphis.
